Meet Coach Caryl Dawson

Basketball ImageA native of Jacksonville, FL, Caryl played for the late legendary coach at Jean Ribault High School, Bernard Wilkes.  A three year letterman at Ribault, Caryl was known for his excellent basketball skills, leadership abilities and uncanny 42-inch leaping ability.  While at Ribault, Caryl won the city Slam Dunk Contest and was on many all-star lists and in some listings, Honorable mention All-American.

After graduating from high school, Caryl signed a Division 1 scholarship to play with Davidson College (NC).  A 6-feet point guard, Caryl started during his freshman year and was a track to make the all freshman team in the Southern Conference.

Needing to make a change, Caryl transferred to the College of Charleston (SC) where he helped lead the Cougars to the NAIA tournament 3 years.

After college, Caryl played professionally for 8 years, ending his professional career in South American (Sao Paulo, Brasil).
While living in Charlotte, NC, Caryl assisted former College of Charleston teammate and owner of the Carolina Basketball Academy Dwayne Grace, conducting basketball camps and individual training sessions for both male and female athletes-several who went on to play on the collegiate and professional levels.

Caryl now brings this passion back home to Jacksonville where he will develop the next great wave of basketball players.

Basketball ImageHere are a few quotes about Coach Caryl Dawson:
"Caryl Dawson was the prototypical point guard with solid ball handling and awesome court vision and savvy....and when you add superb athleticism to the mix (he competed in dunk contests with me at only 6'0 tall) he was great to play with."

- Ace Tanner-Davidson College

“Playing basketball with Caryl at Davidson College was enjoyable on many levels. On the court, he was an overall great teammate and a solid floor leader with a flair for the spectacular. Off the court, Caryl was loved by teammates and coaches alike because he was so much fun to be around. All campers will benefit from his basketball knowledge and infectious, "can-do" spirit”.
